Well, the last in a series of 3 films is live today on GearJunkie. Our trek of the Devil's Path in upstate New York was a great trek in a beautiful area. Lots of up and down, but worth every step. We went from Manhattan to the Catskills and back to make this film. It was quite and adventure and I really enjoyed filming it.

I had the good fortune of working in Germany last week and took a few days for myself to see the country. I immediately hopped a train to the gorgeous town of Garmisch. I had hoped to climb, but weather in the mountains degraded, and the guides all said "no".
I hiked up a small moutain to shoot these photos and see what I could see. I was not disappointed.
Last week the Wall Street Journal assigned me to shoot at a manufacturing plant in Plymouth, MN. The company, Turck Inc. is trying to throw it's "low wage" employees a bone. They are experimenting with work-from-home options, as well as, small increment "paid time off" allowances.
A number of companies are starting to look for ways to keep employees happy and turnover numbers low. GO read Rachel Emma Silverman's article if you'd like to know more:
"For Hourly Jobs, White-Collar Perks"
And here is an image that I never realized was published: From the WSJ's Photo of the Day page:
This shopper was waiting in the 11 degree cold around 1:00am on Black Friday last year. I've never wanted to save money so badly that I'd sit in the cold outside a Target store. Sorry, family members - it's just not worth it for this guy.

The second of three trek films is live on GearJunkie.com today. This trek was a doozy. We attempted 65mi of trekking/running on a very vague trail in the northwoods of MN in 24 hours. We did not make our goal, but we did make a very fast go of it. As always, it was a true adventure. Watch the video to see what I mean.
I leave next week for #3 - I'm preparing for the pain even now.
Las Vegas is not my kind of town, but it does host one of my favorite races of the year. I had the pleasure of attending CrossVegas once again this year and couldn't help but shoot a few images during the races.
Start of the Elite Women's race. These girls are way faster than you and I.
Elite Men warming up under the lights.
Coming in hot.
Still the best looking kit in the Pro scene.
CrossVegas has a huge course - this was a popular spot for dollar hand-ups.
Last month I climbed and filmed with the GearJunkie on a speed ascent of King's Peak --Utah's highest point. The video is for a series of films we will do with the theme of "fast and light". Of course, as a gear review site, it makes perfect sense for the GearJunkie to showcase the fancy, often expensive gear that makes such trips possible.
King's Peak is not and impossibly tough climb, but carrying the gear and filming and trekking all at once made this one of my most challenging jobs. I loved every minute of it though.
Stay tuned as the next film is being edited now and will be released by the end of the month (if all goes well).

The Minneapolis Star Tribune ran a story by Stephen Regenold a few Sundays ago on his travels to Patagonia and the places he's seen during his wilderness racing there. I have accompanied Stephen on both of these trips, reporting from the field and shooting the amazing areas we travel through. 6 of some of my favorite images ran with the story. Go read the article here: Chile's Great, Wild Place.
A favorite image from Patagonia in 2010 - a shepherd and his horse.
Ironically, I was not around to blog about my press because I was filming a trek in another wilderness area -- the Boundary Waters Canoe Area on the Minnesota/Canadian border. It was wild land, with plenty of bear, wolf and moose signs (we only laid eyes on a single moose after dark one night). I'll post a link to the film when it goes live later this next month.
Sarah Haskins - women's overall winner. Very fast lady!
Better late than never - This race was held last month in and around Lake Nokomis in south Minneapolis. It was a gray, threatening day at the beginning, but turned out to be a pretty great day to race.
Lifetime Fitness, one of my newer clients, is big on hosting races and this is one of the biggest Tri's in the nation. These are a few images from the race. Look for them in promo material in the coming year.
This guy was plenty pleased with his mid-pack finish.
I got a call earlier this week from someone who had seen the latest Peacoc Groove Custom Cycle. It went like this: "DUDE! You have GOT to get over to Erik's and shoot this Voltron bike if you have time. It's the hottest bike I've ever seen him build."
I made time. I wish it had been a complete bike, because it would have photographed a little easier, but even so, this is a really great looking frame. Curved and aero tubes all at once? -- What?! I hae to confess that though I think the theme is really cool, it does not carry deep meaning for me. I never really watched Voltron. But this bike is for sure hot and some lucky guy is going to really love this thing when it is built up.
I heard it was a little late getting to him and he is feeling bothered. I'm willing to wager that all melts away when he peels open the box and pulls this frame/rim combo out.
Well done, (again) Erik. Can't wait to see the next bike in the Voltron series.
This last wknd I drove to the beautiful, bluff-country of Winona, Minnesota to photograph the 3rd running of the Trinona. I was hired to shoot the race, billed as the "biggest little race". The most notable feature is a monster climb on the bicycle leg and I have to give major props to all the racers who gutted it out to roll over the top of that hill. It made me glad to be on a motorcycle!
My moto was actually a 1972 Moto Guzzi 850 and I was in the sidecar! Awesome! That was a first for me, and it actually worked out better than riding two-up on a normal bike. I could really hang out of the sidecare and get some low perspectives. Thanks to my driver, Mark for whipping me around the course all morning.
I've got thousands of images to weed through, but I will be posting more as the week progresses. Once again, well done, racers. It was super fun to be there doucmenting your struggle.
